Food and coffee breaks

Welcome to the table! You can eat well in the region’s “ordinary” eateries or some of our cosy restaurants in hotels and guesthouses in the area. They love to serve locally produced food and promote the real Jämtländ traditional fare, sometimes with game as a speciality. If you’re dying for a coffee there are plenty of idyllic spots, often with homemade buns on the plate and in unusual places such as village stores, art galleries or summer farmsteads, with cows grazing peacefully in the background. Or why not fill up your backpack with delicacies and enjoy a cup of hot coffee at the foot of the mountain?

Suggestions

Please call and book a table in advance, as restaurant opening times in residential accommodation depend on the season.

Mus-Olles Museum

Ytterån, Ytterån
Museums / Cafés
A museum displaying around 150 000 cultural objects collected by a man called Mus-Olle. (Mus = mouse). The collections include packages, unusual wooden artifacts, minerals, shells, buttons, buckles, books, newspapers, stamps, envelopes, trade items, glass, labels, to name some. Open during the summer when there's also a summer café serving homemade bread. The museum is located in the scenic village Ytterån. Per-Olof Nilsson opened his museum already in 1906. He was a dedicated collector who over a period of 75 years collected 150 000 objects. When Mus-Olle, as he was called, wasn’t fishing in Lake Alsensjön, he was collecting things on his bicycle. Sometimes he traded for fresh fish, other times he used his powers of persuasion. His packaging collection is impressive. Everyone with an interest in design will enjoy the 25 000 packaging items, such as matchboxes, sweets, corn, bars of soap, perfumes, smoking tobacco, snuff, spices, coffee, stamps, printed material, porcelain, ceramics, textiles and clothing items. By the end of the 19th century, Ytterån was a famous spa resort, and the guests came to drink the ferriferous water that was supposed to cure most ailments. Mus-Olle welcomed them at the railway station before helping them to one of the five hotels or Societetshuset in the village. In recognition of his help he would be given a small gift, perhaps sweet or tobacco wrapping. He eventually learned to speak English and German and was able to converse with guests from the rest of Europe. This helped in adding to the collections fantastic items also from other countries. On his 50th birthday, Mus-Olle formed Ytterå Hembygdsförening so that the association, after his death, could look after his collections, which is still the case. The museum is located on Mus-Olle’s property, the original museum as well as the more modern one. A cozy café offers waffles and homemade bread. The museum building is adapted to the disabled and the spacious parking area may accommodate caravans or campers.
